Heavy Cream Substitutes

You are eating a FODMAP Free diet, but your recipe calls for heavy cream.  Try some of these substitutions:

Silk Vanilla Creamer

  • Silk — the makers of soy milk, almond milk, coconut milk and other non-dairy lactose free products — offers a French Vanilla creamer that can be a 1 to 1 substitute for heavy cream.  Because vanilla flavor has been added, if your recipe calls for vanilla extract, cut the amount of extract in half to avoid an overpowering vanilla flavor.


  • Puree firm (or medium firm in a pinch) tofu and you can substitute it for heavy cream. We recommended the tofu be pureed in a blender or food processor to get the right consistency.  Pureed tofu can be substituted in a 1 to 1 ratio for heavy cream.

Rice Milk or Soy Milk

  • Rice milk and soy milk are too thin and have no fat so are not a straight substitute for heavy cream.  However, if you are desperate, mix one of these milks with plain vegetable oil (not olive, peanut or sesame oil as they have too much flavor) or melted dairy-free butter.  2/3 cup rice milk or soy milk and 1/3 cup vegetable oil or margarine is the equivalent of 1 cup heavy cream.

Coconut Cream

  • Coconut cream will work as heavy cream substitute in a 1 to 1 ratio.  If you can’t find coconut cream at the grocery store or organic market, you can also use coconut milk … but only the “cream” that rises to the top of the can.  You can skim the cream from the top of a can of coconut milk.  Be aware that using coconut cream will change the taste of your recipe by giving it a hint of coconut flavor … only you can decide if that is appropriate or not.

Oat Supreme

  • If you live in the UK or are travelling there, you can use Oat Supreme as a 1 to 1 substitute for heavy cream and it can even be whipped for whipping cream.  Unfortunately, it is currently only available in the UK.  “Oat Supreme non-dairy product alternative to cream”.

    I can’t do any cheese, sour cream or milk. Half and half is ok. Any thing I bake that uses dairy, i mix water and half and half in equal parts. Haven’t had a fail yet. :)


      Interesting! Another example of how people react differently. I can’t tolerate half-n-half. If you need sour cream, check out our FODMAP Free sour cream. I usually make it the day before so it sets and the flavor is consistent.

    I have read at many sites that coconut milk/cream was not a low fodmap food???


      Coconut is low FODMAP versus FODMAP Free and many people tolerate it well. The best way to figure out if you can tolerate it is to try a little and see if you react. We have no reaction to coconut or any coconut products such as coconut oil, coconut flour, coconut cream and coconut water … especially in baking. The science behind this diet is so limited that there is not enough informaton to know why some people can eat coconut and not react and others cannot.
